zelleta

Zelleta Contraceptive Pill

Zelleta is a progestogen-only contraceptive pill, commonly known as the ‘mini-pill,’ used to prevent pregnancy. It contains the active ingredient desogestrel, a synthetic form of the female hormone progesterone. Unlike combined oral contraceptives, Zelleta does not contain oestrogen, making it suitable for women who cannot take oestrogen-containing pills.

How Does It Work?

Zelleta prevents pregnancy through two primary mechanisms:

  • Inhibition of Ovulation: Prevents the release of an egg from the ovaries.

  • Thickening of Cervical Mucus: Makes it more difficult for sperm to enter the womb.

These actions effectively reduce the likelihood of fertilization and pregnancy.

  • Starting on Day 1-5 of Your Period: If you start taking Zelleta on days 1 to 5 of your menstrual cycle, you will be protected from pregnancy immediately.
  • Starting at Any Other Time: If you start Zelleta at any other time in your cycle, you should use additional contraception (such as condoms) for the first 2 days.

If switching from another progestogen-only pill, you can switch straight to Zelleta without any additional contraception.

When taken correctly, Zelleta is over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.

Standard Method:

  • Daily Intake: Take one pill daily at the same time each day without any breaks between packs.

  • No Breaks: Unlike some other contraceptive pills, there is no 7-day break when taking Zelleta.

Administration Tips:

  • Consistency: Taking the pill at the same time each day is crucial to maintain its effectiveness.

  • Missed Dose: If you are more than 12 hours late in taking a pill, take it as soon as you remember and use additional contraception for the next 2 days.

Benefits of Taking Zelleta

  • Suitable for Oestrogen-Sensitive Individuals: Ideal for women who cannot take oestrogen-containing contraceptives.
  • Continuous Protection: Provides uninterrupted contraceptive coverage without the need for a break.
  • Fewer Side Effects: May have a lower risk of certain side effects associated with oestrogen, such as blood clots.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Irregular menstrual bleeding
  • Headaches

  • Breast tenderness

These side effects are usually mild and tend to subside as your body adjusts to the medication.
