Cerazette

Cerazette is a progestogen-only pill (POP), commonly referred to as the ‘mini pill’, used to prevent pregnancy. It contains the active ingredient desogestrel, a synthetic form of the female hormone progestogen. Cerazette works primarily by thickening the cervical mucus to hinder sperm movement and, in many cases, by inhibiting ovulation.

How does it work?

Cerazette prevents pregnancy through two primary mechanisms

  • Thickening of Cervical Mucus: Makes it more difficult for the sperm to enter the womb.
  • Inhibition of Ovulation: Prevents the release of an egg from the ovaries in most patients.

Effectiveness of Cerazette

When taken correctly, Cerazette is over 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.
How long does cerazette take to work?

  • Starting on Day 1 of your period: If you take Cerazette on the first day of your period, you will be protected from pregnancy immediately.
  • Starting at Any Other Time: If you start Cerazette on any other day of your cycle, you should use additional contraception (such as condoms) for the first 2 days.

If you are switching from another contraceptive pill, follow your pharmacists / doctors guidance to ensure continuous protection.
