What is earwax?
Your ear canal generates cerumen, often known as earwax. It is created to keep dust, bacteria, organisms, and foreign objects from entering the ear canal. Additionally, it reduces irritation of the ear’s skin caused by water. In some individuals, the wax can become hard and impacted over time, causing problems such as hearing loss or discomfort.
What are the main signs and symptoms of earwax buildup?
The signs and symptoms of blocked ears depend on the severity of the ear wax build-up. Generally, the symptoms can include:
- earache
- difficulty hearing
- itchiness
- dizziness
- an ear infection
- sounds such as high-pitched tones coming from inside the ear (tinnitus)
If your symptoms persist, they could be caused by other conditions so make sure that you check with your doctor.
What to expect at your ear wax removal appointment?
Rest assured that our specially trained Pharmacist will use the
safest method of wax removal to help you hear again.
- Your wax removal appointment will take 30 mins.
- After asking a few questions to get a better understanding of the health of your ears, our pharmacist will examine your ear canals and ear drums by using an otoscope (magnifier with a light). They will record this information to help keep track of any changes in your ear over time.
- We’ll then talk you through the procedure and show you the equipment that will be used and explain how it works. You’ll need to sign a consent form before we remove any wax from your ears.
- Once you are happy to go ahead, our pharmacist will use a gentle water irrigation to remove any wax that’s in your ear.
- After our Pharmacist has performed the procedure, they will then check the health of your ears and record this information.
