Iron Deficiency Test by Newfoundland

The Newfoundland Iron Deficiency Test is a rapid, at-home finger-prick blood test that detects
ferritin — the body’s iron-storage protein. Results in about 5 minutes.
It helps screen for low iron stores that can lead to iron-deficiency anaemia. For human use only.

What’s in the Kit

  • Ferritin test cassette (lateral-flow)
  • Buffer/diluent vial
  • Sterile lancet, alcohol swab
  • Capillary tube/dropper
  • Instructions for use

What It’s For

Screens for low iron stores when you have symptoms such as:

  • Tiredness, low energy, poor concentration
  • Pale skin, shortness of breath, palpitations
  • Hair loss, brittle nails, frequent headaches

Ferritin reflects iron stores. Low ferritin suggests iron deficiency; you’ll still need a clinician to confirm and manage the cause.

Directions for Use

  • Adults (18+): read the leaflet first.
  • Warm/clean fingertip; use lancet to obtain a blood drop.
  • Collect the sample with the capillary/dropper and add to the cassette well.
  • Add buffer as directed and start timing.
  • Wait ~5 minutes; read within the stated window.
  • Interpretation (typical):
    • Two lines (T+C): Ferritin below threshold (often 30 ng/mL) → possible iron deficiency → speak to your GP/pharmacist.
    • One line (C only): Ferritin at/above threshold.
    • No C line: Invalid → repeat with a new test.

Precautions & Warnings

  • For human in-vitro diagnostic use. Single-use only.
  • Do not use after expiry or if the pouch is damaged.
  • Abnormal results need clinical follow-up (full blood count, ferritin, CRP, etc.).
  • Ferritin can be falsely normal/high during infection or inflammation.
  • If you’re pregnant, have chronic disease, or heavy menstrual bleeding, discuss testing and treatment with your GP.
  • Store at room temperature; keep out of reach of children.

Performance & Helpful Info

  • Finger-prick whole blood; result in ~5 minutes.
  • Manufacturer-reported accuracy typically >95–99% under intended use.
  • CE-marked for self-testing.

This is a screening tool. Management depends on clinical assessment and lab tests. Do not start iron therapy without advice if you have risk factors (e.g., haemochromatosis, chronic liver disease).

FAQs

Does this measure haemoglobin?
No — it screens ferritin (iron stores). Your GP may order a full blood count for haemoglobin.

Can illness affect the result?
Yes. Ferritin is an acute-phase reactant; infections/inflammation can raise it. Test when you’re well.

What if I’m borderline?
Speak to a clinician about repeat testing and causes (dietary iron, menstrual loss, GI blood loss). They may arrange confirmatory labs.
