How Does It Work?
Tadalafil belongs to a class of medications called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, which enhances blood flow during sexual stimulation, facilitating the achievement and maintenance of an erection. It's important to note that sexual arousal is necessary for tadalafil to be effective.
Clinical studies have shown that tadalafil is effective in approximately 80% of men with ED. Its long duration of action, lasting up to 36 hours, allows for greater spontaneity compared to other ED treatments. This extended window has earned it the nickname "the weekend pill."
Tadalafil typically begins to work within 30 minutes to an hour after ingestion. Unlike some other ED medications, its absorption and effectiveness are not significantly affected by food intake, allowing for flexibility in timing and meal choices.
On-Demand Dosing:
For most men, the recommended starting dose is 10mg, taken prior to anticipated sexual activity. Depending on efficacy and tolerability, the dose may be increased to 20mg or decreased to 5mg. Do not take more than one dose per day.
Daily Dosing: For men who anticipate sexual activity more than twice a week, a daily dose of tadalafil may be appropriate. The recommended dose is 2.5mg taken once daily at the same time each day, without regard to timing of sexual activity. Based on individual response, the dose may be increased to 5mg daily.
Side Effects of tadalafil
As with any medication, tadalafil may cause side effects, though not everyone experiences them. Common side effects include:

- Indigestion
- Back pain
- Muscle aches
- Flushing
- Nasal congestion
These side effects are usually mild and temporary, resolving within a few hours. If you experience severe or persistent adverse effects, such as an erection lasting more than four hours (priapism), sudden vision loss, or chest pain, seek immediate medical attention.
Important warning & precautions
Nitrate Interaction: Do not take tadalafil if you are using nitrates for chest pain, as this combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
Medical Conditions: Consult your doctor before using tadalafil if you have heart problems, low blood pressure, or have had a recent stroke or heart attack.
Alcohol Consumption: While moderate alcohol consumption may not significantly affect tadalafil's efficacy, excessive drinking can impair the ability to achieve an erection and may increase the risk of side effects.
